Half of Oscar

The return of Mary

Half Oscar is a movie at odds with the highly successful and controversial 4 Torrente. All the objectives pursued (and achieved) by Santiago Segura are neglected in this unclassifiable production is distinguished radically, both in substance and in form, the cinema we are seeing inhabited.

Directed by Manuel Martín Cuenca, from which almost everyone remembers their first feature film, The Weakness of the Bolshevik , as the film showed an actress today, almost cult, María Valverde but The Weakness of the Bolshevik already pointed the qualities of this filmmaker to delve into opaque characters with problems in the back, as will be apparent normality cracking from a triggering event.

I have not seen Hard Times, the second film of Martin Cuenca, but I can say Half Oscar takes the merits of his debut, and delves into the boredom of a person overwhelmed by frustration. Autoreprimido in its most intimate impulses, which aims to consolidate its place in a society that imposes rules and he feels left out. The feelings that Oscar fed to her sister, absent from the family environment for ulterior motives that will unravel, fall squarely within the realm of the forbidden. Feelings that barely manages to hold off because of the distance that one day the girl got involved.
A family event will force her to return home (the burial of the grandfather who grew up after the death of their parents) and all the stifled and repressed feelings revived again, with consequences that lead to a headlong rush, and no return.

Oscar Half a film in which there is little action and the narrative tone is appropriate to that character's disability status, unable to move in search of an exit line with the orthodoxy that requires logic, not of our culture, but our behavior as a species. The forbidden, unmentionable, taboo, the impossibility of an impossible passion to unleash ... that security is tied when in the past had been rampant.

Oscar Half uses long shots and framing-camera sequence in which the landscape, the action of the characters speak without us having to hear a single word (and not a single note throughout the film), in a risky exercise in style indebted to the Nouvelle Vague of Truufaut, Rohmer, Chabrol's first ... of the English Jaime Rosales, Víctor Erice and José Luis Guerin.

We are facing a very interesting film and very courageous, do not falter to the tastes of the audience and think about finding the narrative tone that the story and characters demand. The average achieved because sometimes we lose by psychological meanderings that we can not follow the characters as they do for the sheer cliffs and dunes of the desolate landscape of Almeria coast away from the postal Tourist like the plague, to the point that it in the center of the narrative and provide as much or more about the story, the characters themselves.

A Half Oscar awaits you more than certain ostracism from the public, the public today rants of this type of film and drools at the drool (and other excretions) of filmmakers and films ravage the box office. But we know that is before our senses have been destroyed so trash culture.
